Burford Quaker Meeting 'Quakers' started as a nickname - their real name is the Religious Society of Friends - but they are quite happy to be called either Friends or Quakers. The Religious Society of Friends is a small group (about 28000 members and attendees in Britain, much larger numbers in the Americas and Africa) with a special view of what religion means, and of Christianity in particular. Anybody can attend the local Quaker Meeting for Worship. After a while if they find they share Friends' outlook, they can become members and take a bigger part in the Society's life. Visit their site by clicking here. ekklesia Ekklesia is a theological think-tank which works to promote theological ideas in the public square.
They also work to help churches and other groups think through issues from a theological/Christian perspective.

Fair Trade
13th March 2004 - Witney and Faringdon Methodist Circuit gains Fair Trade status from the Fair Trade Foundation. To do this, each of the 17 churches agreed to the following criteria1) use Fair Trade tea and coffee for all meetings for which they have responsibility. 2) move forward on using other Fair Trade products (such as sugar, biscuits, fruit etc) 3) promote Fair Trade during Fair Trade Fortnight -and through other activities, whenever possible. (We invite other organisations using our premises to consider joining us.) This is part of an initiative to make the whole Oxford and Leicester Methodist District "Fair Trade". We believe we are the first Methodist Circuit in the country to formally do this! MP David Cameron joined us @ High Street Methodist Church Witney for the presentation of certificates.
Friends of Hailey Church undertake improvements which do
not come within the scope of funds for the maintenance of the fabric of
the church: to help, if necessary, with grants towards other essential
work in the church or churchyard which, in the opinion of the Friends,
could not otherwise be undertaken, in agreement with the Hailey Church
Committee and the P.C.C.. Check out this interesting site by clicking here.
Jubilee Debt Campaign On September 26th 2002, Churches Together in Witney hosted a Jubilee Debt Campaign African Speaker Tour event about the debt crisis and its effect on the famine in southern Africa. David Cameron MP for Witney, joined debt campaigners from all over Oxfordshire and beyond to listen to Francis Ng'ambi from Malawi. He was touring the country speaking about the devastating effect that debt is having on his people. He told movingly how Malawi, one of the world's poorest countries, is in the grip of famine. The food shortages have been exacerbated by the earlier sale of grain reserves under pressure from the EU and World Bank, to help pay off its debts. Because of their bad advice, his people are starving. He begged the people of our country to use their influence to help by lobbying their elected leaders for immediate and complete debt cancellation for Malawi. David Cameron MP said he was shocked to learn that the country spent an amazing 20% of its budget on debt repayments and only a mere 4% on health and 3% on education. The average life expectancy in Malawi now is just 37 years. ![]()
