House Groups at High Street Methodist Church
All members of our congregation are invited, and encouraged, to join any of these groups or, if necessary, to form additional groups. Most of the groups meet on a Tuesday which for some may not be a convenient evening, so if there were a few who would prefer to meet on another evening-why not?
Where? Donnington Close, Witney
What? Our group started in the Spring of 1999, initially from members of an Alpha course, but we have gained a few on the way. None of us has ever run a house group before or had any theological training-we therefore consider ourselves to be a novice group. As nearly all of us are in full time employment we find that meeting monthly suits us best. This obviously throws us out of step with other house groups, but we still feel very much part of the ‘house group circle’ at High Street. We currently have 13 members and, as we are restricted for space, it is a little difficult to expand but anyone wishing to join us would be made more than welcome.
When? Monthly.
Where? Newland Methodist Chapel, Witney
What? Our group offers an open devotional meeting. Most weeks about 15 of us, from a variety of Christian denominations-and none-meet in an informal atmosphere. Not everyone enjoys the depth of sharing and discussion that takes place in the typical house group so this could provide a good starting point where you will find fellowship and pastoral care but no demands of participation-unless you want to.
When? 7.30pm Thursday evenings.
Where? New Yatt Road #1, Witney
What? There are two house groups here, one in the morning at 10.45 (coffee at 10.30) which finishes at noon and one in the evening starting at 7.30 with coffee to close at approximately 9.15. The same material is used for both groups, so members don’t need to join one or the other, as they can attend either at any time. Inevitably the morning session tends to be an older age group (mostly retired) and at present is the larger of the two with 18 on the morning ‘list’ as compared to 10 for the evening. Our aim is twofold-to grow in faith and knowledge of the faith and to build up a pastoral care for each other. We recognise that we are all at different stages on our spiritual journey but also of the importance of the church community in this journey. We tend to be Bible based whether it is straight Bible study or thematic, we use whole group discussion and small break down groups of 4 or 5. We do roughly 3 sessions a year-September-February/March; Lent (following the ecumenical course); Easter-July. We have an ‘altogether’ meal at Christmas and a Day Retreat in July.
When? 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month (see above for times).
Where? New Yatt Road #2, Witney
What? Our group aims to provide fellowship, study and discussion. Members are encouraged to take the lead on a wide range of topics, as agreed by the group, which have included: The Twelve Apostles (12 sessions); other faiths (6 sessions); tapes from Home Missions and The Holy Land.
When? 2pm every other Friday.
Where? Quarry Road, Witney
What? There are usually 5-7 people who study the scriptures, share and pray together and support one another. We are simple folk (no local preachers!) and struggle together and yet learn together more of God’s Word and purpose. New members would be welcome-the criteria? A good sense of humour and honesty!
When? 7.15pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month.
Where? Riverside, Witney
What? Several of the elderly residents meet regularly for Bible study and fellowship. They would welcome other residents to join them.
When? Friday afternoons.
Where? Vanner Road, Witney
What? We have about 12 members and aim to encourage and enable each other to move forward on our journey of faith in an open and loving way by studying the Bible, exploring its meaning and message in relationship to life today. We try to provide a balanced mix of Bible study, prayer and fellowship in which everyone is encouraged to participate. The leader initiates the study and discussion but the sessions are very much a ‘group’ activity. We are an informal group who enjoy meaningful discussion in an open, honest way in which every member’s point of view is respected. We care for and support each other with love and good humour. Fun and laughter are part of our group’s mutual sharing and caring. We always have a time of prayer and reflection with intercessions for those in need/healing. We also have social events, a Christmas party, summer barbecue and walks.
When? 7.45pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month.
