High Street Methodist Church Witney
First and foremost we are a Christians, part of a worldwide movement of people who place their trust in the God who made everything - even us - and whose love surrounds us daily. We look to Jesus who we believe to have been the same God living in human form for guidance on how to live our lives and who to relate to others.

If you want to know more about Jesus, read what was written about him by four different observers and recorded in the books of the Bible known as Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

You'll need Adobe's Acrobat reader software to read them - click here to get it free.

Our church exists within a Methodist circuit of churches and chapels that span West Oxfordshire from Faringdon in the South to Charlbury in the North. The name of our circuit is the Witney and Faringdon circuit, referenced within the Methodist connexion (the sum of all the churches and circuits in Great Britain) as circuit number 23/3.

You can find out more about the Methodist Church of Great Britain and the churches that make up its connexion by going to their Internet site; see our links page for the address.

What's New
In Touch
Every two months in conjunction with our sister Methodist churches in Witney we publish a magazine called "In Touch".

This has regular features such as the minister's letter and timetable of events but also contains contributions from members of our own  congregations.

If you give us your e-mail address we can even add you to our growing list of people who receive In Touch electronically - e-In Touch.

Our History
Methodism has at its roots one person whose vision, determination and faith inspired fellow seekers to re-assess their lives and renew their relationship with God. John Wesley (1703-1791) challenged the religious assumptions of his day, urging those to whom he preached to 'trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation' for the assurance that we are all forgiven through Christ.

When John Wesley was at Oxford University, he was part of a small group of students who held regular meetings for Bible study, prayer and Communion. This earned them the nickname 'The Holy Club' or 'Methodists'.

Wesley became a priest in the Church of England, but in 1738 had a spiritual experience that he described as God working in his heart through faith in Christ. He launched a hugely influential preaching ministry and had a flair for organising people into small groups. These he named classes, with locally appointed preachers and leaders, which studied the gospels and prayed together. Wesley's new movement became a separate Church which grew rapidly throughout the 18th century and afterwards.
